Identify and implement energy-efficient technologies and practices throughout the wastewater treatment process. This includes optimising pump and filtration systems, ensuring effective Cleaning in Place, regular ongoing maintenance, and employing advanced process control strategies to reduce energy consumption.
Install on-site renewable energy generation systems to offset the energy demand of wastewater treatment facilities. This can include wind turbines, solar panels and anaerobic digesters fed by organic wastewater.
Capture and use biogas generated during the wastewater treatment process. Biogas is produced when microorganisms digest organic matter in wastewater. This biogas can be used as a renewable energy source for heating, electricity generation, or can be converted to steam for boilers.
Still in its infancy, carbon capture and storage technology can capture a high percentage of CO2 emissions from industrial activities. Captured carbon can be stored underground or reused for purposes such as enhanced oil recovery, building materials and more.
The feasibility and applicability of these approaches may vary depending on factors such as budget, industry, location, available resources and regulatory framework. After implementing as many appropriate strategies to reduce CO2 emissions, remaining emissions can be offset through carbon reduction and conservation projects.
