Liquid Waste Recycling

Since October 2021 there have been outbreaks of Avian flu across the UK and there are numerous control zones in force across the country, with a large concentration of Avian Flu protection and surveillance zones in East Anglia.

This is a devastating blow for poultry farmers, not only through the loss of livestock but the additional pressures of following the strict processes and protocols to control the outbreak and prevent re-infection.

Here at Alpheus, we’re not experts on Avian flu. However, as experts in liquid waste management, we can offer essential advice and support on safe wastewater treatment and disposal for poultry farms.

Liquid waste management in poultry farms during an Avian Flu outbreak

Preparing for cleaning and disinfection

Prior to the cleaning and disinfection process, farms must submit a ‘disposal of disinfectant wash’ form to the Environment Agency for approval to give details on how the washwater will be processed, what disinfectant will be used, how much the disinfectant will be diluted, and the disposal method.

The Environment Agency have published online instructions on cleaning and disinfecting following an outbreak. They recommend using existing waste disposal systems where possible, with the following systems suggested in order of preference:

  • Drain to a foul sewer, with approval from your wastewater service supplier.
  • Use a registered water carrier, or waste broker like Alpheus, to ensure safe and compliant disposal.
  • Dispose on land, for which an environmental permit from the EA is required.

What disinfectant can I use for poultry shed and farm washing?

Defra have published a list of approved poultry disease disinfectants. Not all wastewater service suppliers allow disinfectants to be discharged to foul sewer, so it is important to check this. At Alpheus, we’ve been working closely with regulatory authorities and farms and are able to receive most of the Defra approved disinfectants. There are too many to list here, and there are some that may add significant disposal costs, so talk to us now to ensure an efficient service can be arranged.

What happens if I do not follow the Environment Agency rules for poultry farm wastewater disposal?

The legislation aims to protect human health and the environment. If you do not follow the waste duty of care requirements for poultry farm management you could receive a fixed penalty notice, or face prosecution and an unlimited fine.
